Retelling Cinderella with Room 7

In 5th grade, we are reviewing the difference between retelling and summarizing a story. Retelling has lots more details and may contain dialogue, like Room 12's retelling of "Cinderella." The kids took turns adding sentences to the story below:

Ms. Moore's favorite retelling is "Ever After," starring Drew Barrymore.

Retelling

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Ella. Her father and mother were very rich, but her mother died at a young age. She has a cruel stepmom, and her sisters are not any better. They made Ella do work. Soon after, the father died too.

Ella had to do even more work, that got her dirty and covered with ashes, or cinders. And that's how she got the name Cinderella.

Five years later, a ball came up. Her sisters told her that she couldn't come. Once again, she would have to stay and watch over the house and clean while they were gone. She was basically a maid.

She wanted to go to the ball. Her fairy godmother came and made her beautiful, and she was able to go to the ball in a pumpkin that she transformed into a carriage, with a footman that used to be a rat. She said, "You only have until midnight, and then you won't have your nice clothes."

At the ball, Cinderella meets the prince and dances with him. It comes midnight, and she was running away, and she lost her shoe.

The prince tried the slipper on every girl in the kingdom, and came to C's house. The stepmother and stepsisters locked her in the attic. Her stepsisters tried to get their foot to fit in the slipper by cutting off part of their foot.

The prince heard C singing and opened the door. She tried on the slipper and it fit, and they ran off together.

Summary

After we retold Cinderella in four paragraphs, it was time to summarize it in a couple of sentences. The method I taught the 5th graders is Somebody Wanted But So Then. Here are some of the summaries they came up with:

The stepsisters
wanted to marry the prince, so they went to the ball.
But the prince liked Cinderella.
So he married her.
Then the stepsisters had to be her maids.

Cinderella
wanted to go to the ball.
But her stepmother wanted her kids to be rich.
So they tried to make sure C. couldn't come.
Then she met her fairy godmother ...
