Tomorrow's Alphabet with Grade 1

source: powells.com
This week, we read Tomorrow's Alphabet by George Shannon. The first graders had to use their brains to figure out the word for each letter. Here's an example:

A is for seed ... tomorrow's APPLE.

Can you figure out the answers to the following?

  • B is for egg, tomorrow's ____________________
  • D is for puppy, tomorrow's ____________________
  • I is for water, tomorrow's ____________________
  • J is for pumpkin, tomorrow's ____________________
  • K is for tomato, tomorrow's ____________________
  • M is for caterpillar, tomorrow's ____________________
  • N is for twigs, tomorrow's ____________________
  • O is for acorn, tomorrow's ____________________
  • R is for grapes, tomorrow's ____________________
  • T is for bread, tomorrow's ____________________
  • X is for bone, tomorrow's ____________________

Common Core standard addressed: L.1.5 - With guidance and support from adults, demonstrate understanding of word relationships.

Room 3 Sorting

In second grade this week, we're talking about different ways to sort items; our theme for the year is arranging information. Today, the students had to sort a variety of items on their tables ... the number of categories they came up with ranged from 4 to 9.

Then we sorted ourselves by a variety of categories - long sleeves v. short sleeves; colors of shirts; types of shoes; hair color.

Finally, each student got a card and had to find other kids in the class whose color and/or shape matched. I didn't get any photos of Room 2, but here are Room 3 students in action.

The Hat Song

source: capstonepub.com
After reading Caps for Sale last time in PreK, we talked about different kinds of hats this week.

A great book to use for a guessing game is Whose Hat is This? by Sharon Katz Cooper. The kids might have never seen a beekeeper's hat before, and the astronaut helmet is a little hard to identify, but it still makes for good discussion and learning some interesting facts.

After playing some color games, singing some songs, and drawing our own hats, we watched this video. It was still up on the screen when Room 10 and Room 7 arrived for their library times; both classes asked to watch it and got a kick out of it before we moved on to their lessons. Enjoy.

New Books Have Arrived!

Hooray! Our annual order has come in! Below are some of the new titles, based on students' interests and requests. Remember, if you want to reserve one of these books, you can place a hold via RICAT.

These books were ordered from other libraries pretty often last year;
now we have our own copies!

Last year's 4th-graders became interested in Hurricane Katrina
while we were looking up wind speeds in the almanac.
Here is some related nonfiction and fiction to learn more.

Filling in some gaps in our Mo Willems collection.

OK, kids, you tell me you want more scary stories. Here they are.

Caps for Sale!

I met the new DLP class yesterday, and we read the classic Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina. Each student had a cap to hold, put on their head, and then throw to the ground when it was time. Then we glued hats onto tree outlines. Finally, we watched this video (and several kids enjoyed yelling, "Give me back my caps!!!!"):
