Celebrate Read Across America on March 2!

Artwork by Kristina Paetow
The National Education Association (NEA) sponsors the Read Across America event each year on or near March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss, who epitomizes a love of learning.

NEARI will celebrate Read Across America March 2, at Warwick Mall.

The fun begins at 10:00 a.m. and continues until 4:00 p.m. Read Across America is free to the public and includes stickers for every child; a chance to register to win prizes donated by NEARI; puzzle and activity sheets, and reading advice for parents; a book give-away table, sponsored by NEARI education support professionals; and an opportunity to visit and pose with Cat in the Hat herself.

Snowman Tally Chart - PM K

After reading Snowballs by Lois Ehlert, the kindergartners decorated their own snowmen. Then we made a class tally chart of some of our snowmen's characteristics.

You can look for hair, scarves, buttons, and snowflakes on the snowmen below ... keep an eye out for the hair bows and feet, too!

And the Winner Is ... Caldecott Results!!!

So voting was all over the place ... each one of my four second-grade classes had a different class winner. Room 2 chose Little Dog Lost, and Room 3 liked Nighttime Ninja best.

Nighttime Ninja voters with their class winner.
However, when ALL the votes were tallied, the book with the most votes (by 1) across 89 students present for voting was ...This is Not My Hat by Jon Klasssen ... which won the award in real life!

Here are some of the kids' reasons for their votes, along with pictures of their favorite parts of the books they chose:

World Book Web

You may have heard that some encyclopedia publishers have stopped producing their print volumes. But they're all still producing online versions. Thanks to the Rhode Island Office of Library & Information Services (OLIS), all RI residents have access to World Book Web through this link:

Third graders agree that it's actually much easier to use than the print version. What do you think?
