Ms. Tomassi and I ran the library station for Field Day ... here are kids from grades K-5 having fun playing games (including many that were donated on Family Game Night - thank you again!).

Room 12 Paraphrasing Practice
The sixth graders are learning about how to avoid plagiarism. After we discussed the skill of paraphrasing (and the need for a good vocabulary ... or at least a thesaurus!), the students wrote original sentences and then paraphrased each other. Here is some of their work:
Original: I went to the basement and felt like someone was watching me.
Paraphrase: I felt like someone was stalking me when I was in my basement.
Original: One time I downloaded an app that detects ghosts. When I opened the app, it detected a ghost in my house.
Paraphrase: I downloaded an app and found a ghost.
Original: I like to see turtles.
Paraphrase: Watching turtles is enjoyable.
Original: The tiger pounced onto a nearby gazelle. The gazelle then attempted to escape the tiger's strength, but it was too weak.
Paraphrase: The tiger crushed the gazelle with its weight.
Original: The zoo animals were roaming around their pens.
Paraphrase: The zoo animals were walking in their enclosure.

Catalog Shopping with Room 6
I'm starting to put together my orders for next year, and I want to make sure that we're getting books the kids will actually want to read ... especially next year's 6th graders. There's always a big dropoff in checkout activity between 5th and 6th. To that end, I had them go through my stack of book catalogs and make purchase recommendations. Here they are shopping:

Thank You for the Game Night Donations!
Thank you so much to FEN for organizing Game Night last week! I had a lot of fun playing chess, Apples to Apples Jr., and hot potato (even though I didn't win on the last one).
Many families donated board games to the library's collection for checkout days and indoor recess, and FEN donated several that they received from Hasbro. Thanks to Rachel McNally for turning this idea into reality. Our new games are pictured below:
