Grade 1 Wockets - Room 105

I like to have the kids create pages for our own version of mentor texts; they copy the structure of the model and add original words and illustrations. The latest edition of Dr. Seuss' There's a Wocket in My Pocket (Continued) by first graders is now available for checkout! You can preview Room 105's pages below:

Telling Fibs in Room 207

Fibonacci, a mathematician who lived during the 1200s, developed a number sequence named after him. Each number is added to the previous number to get the next number: 0 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 and so on.

Author Greg Pincus invented the “Fib” form of poetry, in which each consecutive line has the same number of syllables that appear in the Fibonacci sequence. We wrote some together to practice. For example:

Forest Walk

Trees,
snails,
tree stump,
ant, anthill,
bugs, apple trees, squir-
rels, mushrooms, bees, hornets, snakes,
beehive. We are at a forest right now. Plants, leaves, flies.

Then the students wrote their own. Here are some of their creations:

Blackout Poetry with Grades 4 and 5

Have you ever heard of blackout poetry? It is a form of "found" poetry, where you select words from a written text to create something new. To celebrate National Poetry Month, students in 4th and 5th grade went through discarded library books to choose words and then added images to illustrate them. Finally, they gave credit to their sources.

I've posted some of their creations as images below; you can see more by opening these Google Slide links:
