Grade 3 Bookmark Factory

I try to have activities for the kids to do on checkout days; this week I set up a bookmark-making station that included old cards and catalogs for them to cut up for decorations. I loved the creativity the students showed. I was only able to get photos of third-graders ... enjoy.

Doctor Who!

Yay for reading!
That is Indiana Jones going down into a cave.

I had no idea 3rd graders knew what Emoji was!

Inspired by Minecraft

LOVE. IT.

Yay reading!

Population Density - Grade 4

Grade 4 wrapped up a world geography unit by looking at population density. Students put their countries' area and population into Excel, and we sorted and ran a formula to see how many people lived in each square mile. Then we practiced reading visual representations of data with this map:

Which continents are the most densely populated?

Here's a hint ... one of the cities on one of the continents is Tokyo, where the subway is so crowded that people get squished onto the train cars by professional "pushers." Here's video evidence:

Grade 1 Bug Research

First-graders are learning about text features, starting with the table of contents. Their assignment was to find the "chapter" about how their assigned bug looks, then draw a picture and write a fact.

Guide Word Rags to Riches

Before second graders start using the dictionary, they need to know how to use guide words. So they've been practicing via an online game. So far, the highest score in Mrs. Parenteau's class was 32,000, hit by A.P. Can you beat his score?

See how well you know your alphabet by taking this quiz.

Common Core Standard addressed: RI.2.5 - Know and use various text features to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

Colorful Chameleons - PreK and K

In kindergarten, we read The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle, about a chameleon who wished he could be like lots of other animals. Then the students colored their own chameleons. Some were mixed-up!

This chameleon has a trunk like an elephant!

This one has multiple tails and a hat.

And these kids un-mixed up the puzzle pieces:

Creepy Carrots! - AM PreK and PM K

On checkout days, students in grades 1-6 are always looking for "scary" books. I thought I'd try one out on the younger kids and went with Creepy Carrots, which won a Caldecott Honor last year. It turns out that Jake the rabbit's imagination just ran away with him when he thought he saw creepy carrots everyone ... OR DID IT???

Here is the illustrator, Peter Brown, talking about his inspiration for the artwork.

And here are some of the kids' versions of creepy carrots.

Room 9 Catalog Detectives

Third-graders practiced their online catalog skills today by searching for titles, then matching them up with the correct author and call number ... and then putting the call numbers in shelf order. Here is Room 9 in action:
